Class can be understood as the classification of society and its people into groups, normally placed on a hierarchy. Class is mostly defined by socio-economic status, income, educational background, accent and social network. Due to this, class frequently overlaps with geographical area and occupation. In some societies and throughout history, class has determined social status and mobility between classes is prevented by inequality.

Specifically in the UK, there is distinction between upper, middle, working, and lower class – however around the world these labels may be entirely different. Examples of unequal or unfair treatment or suffering a disadvantage based on class includes pejorative remarks or actions based on:

·Someone’s accent, vocabulary, grammar or pronunciation

·Where someone is from or where they live

·An individual's income

·Whether someone went to private school, grammar school or state school Anyone who experiences being treated unfairly or unequally, disadvantaged, or made to feel humiliated, offended or degraded, because of their class, or a perception about their class is encouraged to disclose this.
